Crowns & Bridges

dental care crowns and bridges

One of the most effective forms of restorative dentistry is through the use of dental crowns and bridges. These procedures enhance both the function and appearance of your teeth and go a long way in improving your smile.

The family-friendly team of dental professional at All Needs Dental aim to be your complete dental care provider in Sydney’s Inner West. Led by Dr Achilles Constantinidis, who has been a local dentist for over 30 years, our aim is to provide you with the best possible dental care and advice.

Crowns – What They Are

Crowns are custom made caps that fit over the top of a tooth. Crowns can be made of porcelain, gold or a combination of porcelain and metal depending on what you and your dentist decide is most suitable for your functional and aesthetic needs. Crowns help to impart strength and durability to teeth that have been heavily restored, are cracked or endodontically treated (have undergone root canal therapy). Crowns can also improve the appearance of teeth and increase the vertical dimension of teeth where required.

Benefits of Crowns

There are many benefits to having a dental crown. They include:

  • Increased tooth strength
  • High fracture toughness
  • Will not react to chemical changes in the mouth
  • Resistant to oxidation
  • Resistant to extreme temperatures in the mouth
  • Excellent esthetics including shade and contour
  • Stain resistant
  • Can stay in the mouth longer

The Tooth Crown Procedure

Crowns for your teeth are made by a laboratory using impressions from your teeth. Technicians design the crowns using a mould made from the impression. The finished crowns are fitted, then when you and your dentist are pleased with the aesthetics and fit, they are cemented to your teeth.

Bridges – What They Are

Bridges are used to fill gaps in your mouth between teeth. They replace single or multiple teeth and are very strong. They also can be fabricated from all porcelain, porcelain and metal or all gold depending on the strength and esthetic requirement for the replacement teeth.

Benefits of Bridges

There are many benefits to having a bridge placed. They include:

  • High durability
  • High fracture toughness
  • Resistant to oxidation
  • Will not react to chemical changes in the mouth
  • Does not cause ill effects to living tissue
  • Stain resistant
  • Reduces tooth sensitivity
  • Cemented in place and do not need to be removed daily like partial dentures. Partial dentures are sometimes a good alternative option to fill gaps in your mouth
  • Avoids the need for surgical intervention for implant placement. Implant placement is sometimes another good alternative option to fill gaps in your mouth

The Bridge Procedure

An impression of your teeth is taken along with an x-ray. Your natural teeth will be used to anchor the bridge work and may be trimmed in something called tooth reduction to permit the bridge to fit properly. The bridge is created by a laboratory that designs them from your impression.

Fabrication can take up to three weeks. The fitting process is next. Once your dentist is pleased with the fit, the bridge will be cemented into place. Initial appointments are required in order to determine if you are a good candidate for either crowns or bridges.
